Quick answer

In 1X2 betting, "1" means the home team wins, "X" means the match ends in a draw, and "2" means the away team wins. It is settled on the result after normal time (90 minutes plus stoppage time), not extra time or penalties.

1, X and 2

1X2 is also called the match result or full-time result market. It has three possible outcomes:

SymbolMeaning
1The home team (listed first) wins
XThe match ends in a draw
2The away team (listed second) wins

The team listed first is the "home" side. At neutral venues, such as cup finals, the first-listed team is still "1".

Worked example

Example odds for Dynamos vs CAPS United:

1 (Dynamos)X (Draw)2 (CAPS United)
2.503.102.90

You stake $2 on X (draw) at 3.10.

  • If the match ends 1–1, 0–0 or any draw, you receive $2 × 3.10 = $6.20, a profit of $4.20.
  • If either team wins, you lose your $2.

If instead you bet $2 on 1 (Dynamos) at 2.50 and Dynamos win 2–0, you receive $5.00 ($3.00 profit).

Normal time only

1X2 bets are settled on the score at the end of normal time: 90 minutes plus any stoppage (injury) time. Extra time and penalty shoot-outs do not count.

Some bookmakers offer separate "to qualify" or "to lift the trophy" markets that include extra time and penalties. Check the market name.

What if the match is abandoned or postponed?

Rules differ by bookmaker, but usually a match that is postponed or abandoned and not completed within a set time is made void: single bets are refunded and the selection counts as odds of 1.00 in an accumulator. Read your bookmaker's rules on abandoned matches.

Is 1X2 a good bet for beginners?

It is the easiest market to understand, which is why it is popular. But three outcomes means you can be wrong in two ways. If you want to cover two results, look at double chance or draw no bet, which have lower odds because they are more likely to win.

Draws are common in many leagues, including Zimbabwe's Premiership, where low-scoring matches are frequent. Do not assume one of the teams "must" win.

Common mistakes

  • Mixing up 1 and 2. Always check which team is listed first.
  • Expecting extra time to count. It does not in 1X2.
  • Treating short odds as certain. A home team at 1.30 still fails to win roughly one time in four.

Summary

  • 1 = home win, X = draw, 2 = away win.
  • Settled on normal time only.
  • Payout = stake × odds; profit = payout − stake.
